“Pastor Hez” on the Radio
“There’s no Praise like an Afternoon Praise” rings loudly from the radio tuned to 1190 WLIB every afternoon. It’s Bishop Hezekiah Walker hosting Afternoon Praise – The Hezekiah Walker Show! It was so exciting for New York to learn that after nearly 14 years of not having a 24 hour gospel station; WLIB announced that their format would change to gospel! WLIB, a former jazz station, became Black-owned in the 1970s. Since becoming Black-owned, the station has broadcast political, Afrocentric, and health-centered programming; and now it is 24 hour gospel effective August 2006.
Pastor Hezekiah Walker, who is a native of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene housing projects began hosting his own segment in November 2006 and has since become an afternoon favorite. Pastor Hez as he is affectionally known is the Pastor of two churches, The Love Fellowship Tabernacle church in Brooklyn N.Y. and in Bensalem Pennsylvania and he is also the Overseer of several churches including a Love Fellowship Church in Cape Town South Africa.
Pastor Hezekiah Walker is a two-time Grammy Award winner with 12 Grammy nominations, Stellar Award nominations, NAACP nominations, Soul Train Music Award nominations and was recently inducted into the National Black Sports & Entertainment Hall Of Fame; the only gospel artist ever given this honor. Pastor Hez has introduced to the world his trusted sidekick “Bro Ron” who is one of the directors of his Church choir. Bro Ron and Pastor Hez have now included Holy hip hop rhythm and praise on the show in an effort to reach a listening audience that normally wouldn’t tune in to a gospel radio station. There is a definite message in all gospel music whether it be traditional, contemporary, Christian or holy hip hop rhythm and praise.
The music on 1190 WLIB really sets the tone to get your praise on in the afternoon! The listening audience is also privileged to some of Pastors He’s special guest interviews. So many gospel greats have come through to talk to Pastor Hez and the listening audience; giants such as Regina Belle, Donald Lawrence, The Caravans, Rickey Dillard, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Kim Burrell Tie Tribett and many more. Pastor Walker had the distinct privilege to interview Bishop Kenneth H.Moales, who is not only the president of the Thomas L. Dorsey Convention, but is also Pastor Walker’s Presiding Bishop. Recently the world renowned Bishop T.D. Jakes stopped by to talk to Pastor Hez.
1190 WLIB was also honored to have Reverend Jesse Jackson on the show. This interview was extremely informative. The audience listened to Rev. Jackson talk about some of the history of black gospel music and many of the other contributions made by African Americans in the early church. Rev Jackson also reminded the listening audience that the Church is powerful and that we the Church should take the forefront when it comes to initiating change. Pastor “Hez” was so moved when Reverend Jesse Jackson congratulated him on his radio show as well as all of his musical achievements.
Pastor Hez’s show was nominated for a Radio & Records Industry Achievement Award for Personality/Show of the Year. 1190 WLIB was nominated for a Station of the Year Award; and Pastor Walker’s show Afternoon Praise will soon be syndicated in many cities.
Pastor Hez is so grateful that the efforts of gospel music and gospel music stations are being recognized by the radio industry. He also believes that in the future 24 hour gospel radio stations will be in every city in the United States and abroad. New York we have a lot to be thankful for; we get to hear the finest in gospel music all day every day. Thanks to the efforts of 1190 WLIB and one of our premier Pastors, Bishop Hezekiah Walker.
